FAQs of Strainer Valves

Pipeline strainers filter out solid particles, rust, scale, and debris from process fluids, protecting pumps, valves, meters, and other downstream equipment from damage and fouling.
Y-strainers are compact and suitable for horizontal or vertical pipelines with moderate particle loads. Basket strainers have a larger screen surface area for high-flow applications and can hold more solids before cleaning.
Cleaning frequency depends on the fluid cleanliness and solid particle content. Typically, strainers are cleaned during scheduled shutdowns or when a pressure differential gauge indicates excessive pressure drop across the strainer.
Mesh size selection depends on the minimum particle size you need to filter and the acceptable pressure drop. Coarser screens (40 mesh) allow higher flow with less frequent cleaning; finer screens (100–200 mesh) provide better filtration but require more cleaning.
